A guy named Matthew records a conversation Jesus had with a crowd of people, we know the conversation as ‘The Beatitudes’. As Jesus was talking He spoke 8 sentences that all started with the words: “Blessed are…”
The word that Jesus uses here for ‘blessed’ is a compound word; it means prolonged and of great depth. If you google #blessed you will find a ton of pictures ranging from cars to houses to pictures of feet on the beach. Every picture I found was of a thing. Don’t misunderstand me here, ‘things’ can be blessings but they are only temporary. The ‘Blessed are…” that Jesus spoke of is a prolonged blessing, not a temporary one. In his book Soul Cravings Erwin McManus writes: “If we’re not careful, we might find ourselves with everything this world has to offer and later find we have lost ourselves in the clutter.”
Are we chasing the short lived blessings that are temporary or the prolonged blessing of great depth that Jesus spoke of?
